UK Training
Your medical education will have three sets or phases within it – especially in the UK.
Medical School
Firstly, you will usually spend five years studying for a degree in medicine at a medical school attached to a university. As well as classroom based learning, you will also spend time in hospitals and GP surgeries to undertake your clinical training.
Postgraduate Medical Education
The second stage of training is postgraduate medical education. This begins with a two-year foundation programme. It then continues with specialist training, which will vary in length depending on the specialism you choose. For example, it takes a minimum of nine years in total to become a general practitioner (GP) and 12 years in total before you can apply to be a hospital consultant.
Qualified doctors can specialise in a number of different fields. There are about 60 specialties which fall into the categories of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, general practice, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, pathology, radiology, anaesthetics and ophthalmology.
Continuing Medical Education
The third part of a Dr.’s training is continuing medical education which carries on throughout a Doctor’s career.
